PHILIP CRUZ / PUN 18
Beneath the Surface
San Juan, Puerto Rico - Walter Otero Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the solo exhibition Beneath the Surface by Philip Cruz / Pun18 which opens on Thursday, September 17 at 7:00pm in the contemporary art space located in #402 Ave. Constitución Puerta de Tierra, San Juan.
Well known nationally and internationally for his graffiti and murals, Philip Cruz/ Pun18, has always maintained his studio practice parallel to his public work with the intention of them both coexisting on the same plane. According to Cruz “This series of works emerges from a compilation of memories and an investigation of how paint, color and the gestural stroke is able to suggest a new dimension of pictorial possibilities to the spectator. Without searching for visual responses, my intention is to give way to an abstract expedition full of possibilities influenced by science fiction. By working with textures, organic forms and the aid of mixed media, like spray paint and acrylic I reassert the quickness of my gestural expression”.
Beneath the Surface will present the recent work of the artist, featuring a more abstract language in his compositions. Each work marks a shift from his previous figurative compositions, heavily influenced by comics, Cruz develops a body of work ocused on composition and the gestural stroke. The artist achieves this without loosing his distinct colors and compositional dynamism of his renowned public work.
Philip Cruz / Pun18 young Puerto Rican artist obtained his BFA in Graphic Design from Atlantic College, 2007 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He has exhibited in group and solo shows, and has also participated in graffiti and mural events in Puerto Rico, Spain, Canada, United States, France and Germany.
