RADAMÉS ”JUNI” FIGUEROA
No Fear, Dead or Alive
San Juan, Puerto Rico – Walter Otero Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the solo exhibition No Fear, Dead or Alive by Radames “Juni” Figueroa, opening on Thursday, May 28th at 8:00pm in the contemporary art space located in #402 Ave. Constitución, Puerta de Tierra, San Juan.
Appropriating the spaces where he exhibits, Radames “Juni” Figueroa will present a series of works which include drawing, sculpture, installation and four paintings of medium format inspired by shamanic symbols and their exotic, esoteric and psychedelic appearance. According to Figueroa “Shamans have the ability to modify reality, they are creatively advanced and they are able to reinvent themselves not only spiritually but also physically. I am very interested in how they transform their spaces and I see them as very knowledgeable beings which motivated these paintings.”
Starting in the first level of the exhibition space the spectator will have the opportunity to be part of this magical expedition created by Figueroa, which finishes in the rooftop of the gallery with an installation that will double as a bar during the opening. Being able to interact on both levels with the exhibition, spectators will complete the cycle of the work where the interaction between spectators and work is essential. In this manner, Figueroa continuously creates experiences that go beyond the gallery or museum space.
Figueroa obtained his BFA from the Escuela de Artes Plásticas in 2007 and in 2013 completed the Programa La Practica, Beta Local in San Juan. His international presence has strengthened in recent years by his participation in the Whitney Biennial, his residency at the Malba Museum and La Ene in Buenos Aires, and his solo exhibition Naguabo Rainbow, Daguao Enchumbao, Fango Fireflies at the Sculpture Center in New York, all of which took place in 2014.
